A green oasis in Gendt
Landgoed Poelwijk is one of the most remarkable places in the Betuwe. It lies directly on the river Waal, surrounded by polder landscape, a bike ride from both Arnhem and Nijmegen.
Since 1981 the estate has undergone a metamorphosis. What was once a moat and meadow is now a green oasis where ecological principles come first. Hundreds of unusual trees, shrubs, hedges and several orchards make up an estate where nature sets the tone.
Mown paths lead you past dozens of sitting places, each built from reclaimed natural materials. No tidy borders, no geometric lines – nature decides the picture.

History

An organised wilderness of 3.5 hectares, listed with the Dutch Garden Society (Nederlandse Tuinenstichting).
Everything around you
Gendt lies in the heart of the Dutch river country. From Poelwijk you cycle in every direction through floodplains and polders and along dikes.
5 ferries
Within 8 km you can cycle to the Liemers, the Ooijpolder, the Millingerwaard nature reserve and Germany.
Arnhem & Nijmegen
Both historic cities – with museums, terraces and railway stations – are a comfortable bike ride away.
Three rivers
The Waal, the Rhine and the Meuse: the river landscapes of the Betuwe are unique in the Netherlands.
2026: our 45th year at Poelwijk
A year with a major renovation of the outbuilding, music in the garden, an exhibition, a wedding and of course the Open Monuments Weekend. And we remain open to new small-scale initiatives.
